Females In Football recognizes the impact of women in America's dominant spectator sport. In 1923, women joined the cheerleading squad at the University of Minnesota. In 1954, the Baltimore Colts became the first NFL team tp have cheerleaders and in 2015, 26 of the 32 franchises have squads. Patricia Palinkas became the first women to play professional football in 1970 with Katie Hnida breaking the barrier in professional indoor football in 1999 and was the first woman to score in an NCAA Bowl Game.

HNIDA POSTED FIRSTS IN MAJOR COLLEGE AND INDOOR PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL

Katie Hnida was born May 17, 1981 in Denver, PA. She grew up in Littleton, CO where she attended Chatfield Senior High School. She was a member of the varsity football team for four years, converting 3 for 3 in field goal attempts and splitting the uprights with 27 of 28 extra points as a senior (Class of 1999) when she was voted "Homecoming Queen" by her classmates and participated in the halftime ceremonies, wearing her uniform. Hnida was named Colorado Sportswoman of the Year (1999) as well as the Number One Teen Most Likely to Change the World by Teen People Magazine.
While attending the University of Colorado as a freshman (1999-2000), she became the first woman to make the team but saw nor action. She transferred to the University of New Mexico where she not only played three seasons for the Lobos, she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Psychology. On August 30, 2003, Hinda booted a pair of extra points in a win over Texas State to become the first woman to score in an NCAA Division I-A (BCS) game and the shoes and uniform she worde are in the College Football Hall of Fame.
Hnida continued her career, becoming the first women to play in a professional indoor football league when she signed with the Fort Wayne Firehawks of the Continental Indoor Football League for the 2010 season. She played in the first three games before developing a blood clot in her kicking leg that placed her on the injured list. She followed with stints in semi-pro football, kicking for the Colorado Cobras of the Colorado Football Conference and the Kansas City Mustangs of the Interstate Football League
