Reorganization of NCAA football divided the colleges into three divisions in 1973. The smaller institutions were categorized as D-II and D-III with the D-II programs permitted to provide their players with athletic scholarships while D-III colleges were not allowed to award athleic financial assistance to its student-athletes.

Louisiana Tech blanked Western Kentucky 34-0 in the inaugural D-II championship game played in Sacremento, CA. The event was hosted in Florence, AL from 1986 until 2014 when it was shifted to Kansas City, MO. Currently, 15 conferences participate in NCAA D-II football encompassing 168 colleges.

Created in 1999, the Division II Football Hall of Fame honors the all-time greats in the history of NCAA Division II football. Only players who have competed at college that has been an active member since the D-II level was established in 1973 are eligible.

From 1999 through 2013, the induction ceremonies were held in conjuction with the NCAA Division II Football Championship which was held in Florence, AL. The permanent display honoring the D-II honorees is housed at the Braly Municipal Stadium in Florence, the home venue of the Universoty of Northern Alabama. Jeff Hodges, Assistant Athletic Director of North Alabama, has served as Chairman of the Hall of Fame since it was created. Click on the D-II HOF logo for complete information.
